Nuclear Proliferation? or NOT??

Dr. AQ Khan

Does anyone remember the whole Nuclear smuggling scandal of 2004 when Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, the father of the Pakistani nuclear bomb admitted to nuclear proliferation and sharing nuclear technology with Iran, North Korea and Libya? Back when he was put under house arrest and made to look like the leader of a nuclear smuggling ring?

If that doesn’t refresh your memory enough, Musharraf pardoned him, after he admitted that he was guilty, and locked him up in his own house. Musharraf then went to his owner, Bush, wagging his tail and hoping to be thrown a bone in return.

It has been four years now. Ever since Mushy has taken off his uniform (and donned civilian clothes.. no he doesn’t walk around naked); Dr. Abdul Qadeer, a hero in the eyes in the almost all Pakistanis, has started speaking to the media over the telephone, accusing the army and saying that they themselves were involved in shipping used centrifuges to north Korea in North Korean planes in 2000. And since Mushy was the Chief of the Army staff, AND the dictator of Pakistan at that time, the army couldn’t actually do something that big without his consent and knowledge, hence he MUST have known too. In response to Mr. Khan’s interviews, the court has ordered him to keep his big mouth shut and just be thankful that he hasn’t been handed over the the ruthless Americans and is not in Guantanamo right now. (well i am sure the court didn’t make these last remarks, but i am sure that this is being conveyed to Mr. Khan indirectly as well)

Anyway, what we need to keep in mind here is, that 2000 was the time that Pakistan was laden with international sanctions of all kinds, firstly as a punishment for having tested a nuclear bomb, and secondly for being a dictatorship. In such times, the country had to do what ever it had to do to survive, in the face of a crumbling economy and rising poverty.

Coming to the point that I am trying to make is, the global community is all about preventing access to nuclear technology to any country that doesn’t have it already; be it imported, smuggled or self developed, like in the case of Iran for example. America, the Leader of the Free world, as they like to label themselves, is the front runner in efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation, followed by its European cronies and ofcourse, the UK. They all make it very clear that no country should acquire nuclear technology. They alone should be allowed to have it, and if anyone else even thinks about it, that country should be isolated, slapped with all kinds of sanctions, and labeled an “axis of evil”.

At the same time, and the hypocrisy is so effing obvious here, the Leader of the Free World, is going around making nuclear deals with India, guaranteeing them access to all kinds of nuclear technology and material, threatening the already unbalanced balance of power in the region.

So if a sovereign country like Pakistan, for example, trades nuclear secrets or material, with ANOTHER sovereign country like Iran or North Korean, for example, that is labeled Nuclear Proliferation and Pakistan is made to look like, to the rest of the world,  the rouge state that is selling something that they shouldn’t be selling.  But when America does it with India, well… what possibly can be wrong with THAT?

This is like, if I sell and possess drugs and guns in the streets of New York, for example, it is OK for me to do it, but if someone else tries to do it, they don’t deserve to exist and should be locked up in a jail with their family, in fact their entire community, with no access to anything to survive.

What I find funny is, that the most vocal country against other countries acquiring nuclear technology, happens to be the ONLY country in the history of mankind to have used nuclear weapons on innocent human beings, not once, but twice!!!

Manmohan Singh Wins

So Manmohan Singh got his vote of confidence. Good for him. Now he and his party can go ahead with the Nuclear deal with the US… IF Bush can pull it off before he leaves office. Whatever led to the vote and whatever the outcome was, that’s news… everyone knows about it.

But what’s the Pakistani reaction to this? That’s the interesting part. In fact, its a whole debate. See on one hand, Pakistan has managed to fall back…. in any race it might’ve been in with India. The two neighbors are still considered rivals, officially or unofficially. The official stance has been changing though, amid realization that Pakistan has fallen behind… way behind. But one cannot forget the nuclear tests of 1998 or the Kargil war of 99 either, neither can one forget the military standoff of 2001-2002. Not rivals anymore? well maybe not in cricket!!! and that too, because Pakistan, once again, has very successfully fallen behind.

Coming back to the Indo-US nuclear deal, what are Pakistanis complaining about? Are we even in the same league as India when it comes to influence on the global economy? We are a nation of, and i hate to say this, corrupt and frustrated illiterate and ignorant fools, who are just sitting around waiting to be bombed from all sides. India on our eastern border would never miss an opportunity, neither will Afghanistan, who already happen to have lots of Indian support, not to mention American and Nato forces on their side. Does America even need to attack us from the Arabian sea? Not really.

The nuclear deal has opened the door for India to get military supremacy Pakistan can not even dream of achieving, not to mention power solution that will obviously contribute to the already rapidly growing economy.

We, well… we can sit around and wait for the electricity to come back on for two hours before going out again for another three. ;)
